The Buzzard Hide

We have five buzzard pairs nesting on the farm, including stunning pale morph variants. At its peak last season, up to four buzzards were feeding on the ground together, along with red kites swooping in from above. The Buzzard Hide sits in the remotest area of the farm, in an exposed location, completely open to the sun from dawn to dusk.

In front of the hide, two raised perches and feeding platforms are the main stage. Grassy banks provide an alternative stage for ground-feeding buzzards. Pruned hawthorn trees also provide living perches to the sides. Check out the gallery below with a few shots from last season.

The Hide

My PhotoHut™ is a purpose-built, fully weatherproof, insulated timber hide, with three photographer stations and camp-beds for the all-nighter. It is possibly the most comfortable hide you will have ever used. Inside the hide, you’ll find supportive and fully adjustable swivel chairs and a rock-solid shelf spanning the full-width and around the sides. The hide is completely blacked out inside with overhead LEDs that you can use to set-up your gear, before you open the shutter.

For each metre-wide photographer station, you have your own 900mm window and cable-operated shutter. The windows all have canvas snoots for lenses and a scrim net viewing panel – so you can see what’s going on out there. The snoots keep you out of sight and protect you and your gear from the elements.

Each photographer also has a heavy tripod-head plate with a standard ⅜ thread, constructed from machined aluminium. They are perfect for mounting a tripod-head and (unlike a clamp of fixed bolt) enable you to freely move the camera position from side to side, while providing a rock-solid platform for your camera and lens. There is plenty of room, if you prefer to use a tripod, but I recommend using the plates. I regularly use these plates with my 600mm f/4 and smaller lenses like the 70-200mm f/2.8.

Location & Scene

The hide is on private land (no public access) surrounded by open pasture used for grazing livestock. The hide lies in a hollow, facing due North. The sun rises on the right and sets on the left of the hide (behind and to the left in mid-winter).

Directly in front of the hide, several grass banks provide the main stage for the ground-feeding buzzards. There are two raised platforms with high perches to resemble tree branches. On either side and slightly further away, there are gnarly hawthorn trees that have been strategically pruned to offer exposed natural perches. The viewing is very clear and the background is a good distance away to avoid any distraction.
